Balance is a waste of time

myth of balance

These days, it’s all about finding your balance. Implying that the key to happiness is finding balance between career, children, family, hobbies, community work, workout- plus, big desires to improve our health and happiness. How it’s possible to balance all these things?

You won’t!

Balance. It’s a myth!

The image that comes up for me hearing the word “balance” is a scale where the idea is, to get things on both sides to balance out and be on an equal weight.

But that’s not how life works.

There times your kids need and get all the attention, at other times you may go on a fun girl’s weekend or a date night. Some days you eat healthy and exercise, other days you indulge and lie on the couch. At times work requires you to put in the extra hour, at other times it’s all about your holidays or preparing a great birthday party.
Other days your friend needs you in a crisis and your plans go out of the window and won’t get done at all.

Each day requires you to be flexible, open minded and creative. The scale will go a bit up or down on each side, depending where your attention is right now.

There’s nothing balanced about life. But it’s exciting and beautiful!

Balance is similar to Perfection. And these two you better watch out for. It may appear that they are your friends, and you get all excited and motivated. Then they walk in front of you, always a few steps ahead and you’ll never catch up with them. Leaving you feeling left out and behind.

That isn’t desirable to me. Is it to you?

That said, there is a way of doing more of what you want and doing less of the rest.

Want to hear it?

Accepting that life is a flow, like ebb and flood. Feeling joyful about the choices you make and spending your energy on what is right for you at that stage in life.

Life is dynamic.

Invite your friends, Mess and Truth and Vulnerability. They have always been there for you.
These three don’t care about a clean or perfect house when they come over. They just want to know what’s really going on with you and what matters to you ! Like, really.

How to get there?

First, I need to warn you that although the equation sounds simple, it actually takes some work. It also requires that you get absolutely clear on what you want your life to look like, and what you do not want in your life.

Ready? Okay, here you go:

  • First ask yourself what isn’t serving you. What doesn’t need to be in your life? What is dragging you down? Keeping you awake at night?
  • Have you identified a few things? Now get rid of them. (Or fix them. Now.) – I know it’s easier said then done, but it’s all about progress.
  • Next, ask yourself what you want in your life—or in this week or day? What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to do? Who do you want to be with?
Be real here, don’t think about the shiny objects that will make you happy only for a moment or two.
If this exercise is difficult for you, turn it around. Imagine you in your last days of life, what is it you want to look back upon on, how do you want to feel about your life? Focus your energy on these things. Anything that doesn’t fit into this larger scheme… let it go (or learn how to say “no”).

Ready to do only what matters to you?

Let your heart expand and your mind and body go wild. Be happy, laugh and tell your loved ones that they’re loved.  Let your children be happy and your home warm and welcoming.

Make space in your live to breath and enjoy the view.
